The 1st Smile

Still trying to capture a good picture of Luke's smiles. This isn't the best smile or picture quality, but all I can get so far.

5 Weeks

Not much of an update since 4 weeks. He is still in the colic phase, but once swaddled he seems to fall asleep rather quickly.
Sleep is still an issue, I was up every hour last night except for 11 pm!
He has started smiling at Hunter which Hunter loves.

4 Weeks

Since last week Luke has officially started smiling! I have tried to capture it on film, but so far I haven't been successful. He is still a great eater. Not sure how much he weighs but I think close to 10 lbs. I won't know for sure until his 2 month check up.

The car - Luke hates the car and the car seat. I know most people say driving lulls their kids to sleep. For me, Luke screams bloody murder for about 10-15 minutes before he will fall asleep.

Sleep - he usually has one 2 1/2 hour sleep stretch per night. The rest are between 1 1/2 and 2 hours. He also is still up for about an hour between 3 and 5 am. I am hoping this will end soon. To get him back to sleep the only thing I have found that works is to walk the halls with him (just what every mom wants to be doing in the middle of the night!)

Hunter is still in love with Luke. When Luke cries, Hunter says "Mommy go get him." He asks where Luke is first thing in the morning and wants to give him kisses and hugs.

My Crafter

Everyone knows I love arts and crafts. I try to encourage Hunter to color, paint, etc. but it doesn't hold his interest for very long. I refuse to give up. This weekend I decided we would paint flower pots and plant seeds. I figured that he would like the painting enough to cover a small pot and then he could play in dirt to plant the seeds. I think he enjoyed it.

By the way, I tried to get him to wear an apron and an old shirt, but Mr. Opinionated refused to wear either, so that is why he is shirtless.

And planting the seeds.....

Do they really look alike?

I have received many emails/comments that Luke and Hunter look so much a like. I would agree when they are sleeping:

But when they are awake I think they look completely different (Luke is much chubbier!):

3 Weeks Old

Luke is really filling out and spending many more hours awake. He has entered the dreaded colic phase typically crying from 7pm - 10pm. We are doing a lot of walking and bouncing with him.

Night time sleep hasn't improved, still up about every 1.5 hours and sleeping on me. I have tried swaddling in the bassinet and sleeping in the car seat but he wakes almost immediately screaming. I am starting to fear the worst, that we will have another bad sleeper.

2 Weeks Old

Luke is growing up a storm. He weighed in at 8 lbs 7 ounces. He is spending more hours awake (usually eating!) We are still struggling with night time sleep. He will sleep for 2 hour stretches but only if he is on me, otherwise he wakes after about 30 minutes in the bassinet. For the past couple of nights he is also staying awake for a couple hours around 3 am. The doctor says it is normal for them to have their days and nights confused and to give it a few more weeks. Hopefully he can work this out soon.

First Bath

I think this picture speaks for itself. Bath time wasn't a hit. I was pretty sure this would be the case. Luke hates being undressed and having his diaper changed. He screams just like this every time we change him. Once I bundled him in his towel he calmed down. Hopefully, this won't be his reaction every time!

1 Week Old

Here is a picture of Luke at 1 week old. He is doing really well, eating up a storm and sleeping a lot during the day. He had his first doctors appointment on Friday, 2 days home from the hospital, and gained 7 ounces since his release. Typical weight gain is 1 ounce per day. Clearly he is a good eater.

Unfortunately so far he is not sleeping the best at night. I am still holding out hope that he will be a better sleeper than Hunter, but currently he is worse. He will only sleep for 1-2 hours at a time and that is if he is sleeping on my chest. Otherwise he wakes after 10 minutes in the bassinet.

He has shown great interest in sucking on his hands, which I am trying to encourage. As you can see he has already found his thumb, and I am holding out hope that he will become a thumb sucker. I know this sounds odd, but Hunter was a pacifier baby and we had so many months of having to put the pacifier back in his mouth in the middle of the night, I would love for Luke to be able to put his thumb in his mouth himself.

Hunter is still excited to have a baby brother and loves to hold and cuddle him. He has shown no signs of jealousy and is really adjusting well.
